The Pureline Nile Tilapia, also known as the Black Nile, is the most widely used Tilapia species for commercial production.  It's hardiness, uniformity, and fast growth makes it the easy choice of most growers.  It is not uncommon for males to reach 1 pound within 10 months!  Most all commercial growers (that we know, anyways) utilize all-male Tilapia.  This is achieved by the hatcheries around the world, utilizing several methods. Production of all male tilapia can be accomplished by such techniques as separating the males and females manually, hybridization which mates two species to produce all-male offspring, or by artificial sex reversal. The most efficient and least expensive method is sex reversal with the use of the 17 alpha-methyltestosterone hormone and is widely used around the world. To artificially create sex reversal, the physical sex direction of the fish is manipulated by the feeding of methyltestosterone prior to and during the early sexless stage of the baby fish, called fingerlings.  If properly applied, the sex reversal treatment can be 98 to 100% effective.

However, a few hatcheries around the U.S. have steered clear of using hormone treatment, one being NW Tilapia.  Instead, we utilize a specially bred male stock, which can only produce male offsprings.  Often referred to as YY Supermales, they only carry the dominant Y gene, and not the X gene needed to produce female offspring.  Don't think, however, by purchasing the all-male offsprings, that you will have a bunch of YY Supermales.  When bred to a Supermale, the female will give her X gene to the male offsprings of the Supermale, making them all XY, incapable of producing all-male offsprings themselves.

NW Tilapia has been involved in a rigorous selective breeding program, to ensure our customers receive a quality of Tilapia that is healthy, fast growing, and disease resistant.  Additionally, we don't follow the standards of feeding practice that most hatcheries do.  Most all hatcheries feed their Tilapia fry a dry blend powdered food...only.  At NW Tilapia, the extra care we put into our feeding program allows the Tilapia a well-rounded, healthy diet.  This diet includes spirulina algae, live brine shrimp (high protein), high-grade dry blend, and other vegetative sources.  Since we have gone to this method of nourishment of our fry, we (along with our customers) have noticed a more lively, faster growing, and disease-resistant fish.  Most all customers, who acquire their fry from us, keep coming back, for those reasons.  And, with our genetics improvements through our selective breeding program, things will only get better!
